| Percentage of adults infected by AIDS in 2009. |
So, I invite you to join another challenge! This one is quite easy and yet has such a huge impact on the lives of children. We are all aware that the African continent is the one the hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic. What most of us ignore, myself included, is that the adults who die of AIDS leave their children behind. There are an estimated 1.9 million AIDS orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa. 500 children a day are made orphans by the combined ravages of AIDS and poverty. The majority of them are left to fend for themselves in shanty towns. Governments and charity organizations do what they can, but it is not enough.

| Beautiful children in beautiful KasCare blankets |
This cause is extremely important to me. I was in college in the early 1980’s when we finally started waking up to the atrocity of Apartheid in South Africa. I attended meetings and went to rallies, but we were all quite frustrated by the feeling of helplessness. What could we, a bunch of kids, half a world away, do to stop Apartheid? Well, South Africa is faced with yet another horrendous problem and this time I am not helpless. I can make a difference. I have joined the knit -a-squillion challenge. I will empty my stash and send beautiful squares to help warm these beautiful children!
Specifically, the goal of the knit-a-squillion challenge is to collect 1,2 million squares by July 1st.
My goal is 500 squares by June 1, 2012.
Will you join me? It's easy:
Will you join me? It's easy:
- Knit or crochet an 8” (20 cm) square (instructions)
- You aren’t a needle person? Upcycle a wool sweater by felting it and cutting it into squares (instructions)
- You want to do more? Hats and sweaters are also needed! (instructions)
- Make a donation on the knit a square site.
- Encourage family, friends, neighbors and colleagues to join.
If that isn’t enough, I have one more incentive! Everyone who sends squares to me will receive coupons from my new online yarn shop, Hands with Hearts! $1 per square, $3 per hat, $5 per sweater

Thank you so much Lynette!! You made my day!!
That is so energizing! you are right, all challenges floating around somehow add up perfectly to each other and I am loving the vibe - things are moving in the right direction this year! And together we will inspire and help each other come with even more glorious selfless ideas!
I am in and you know what, I have a stash of yarns waiting for that project!
I totally agree Sonya. There is definitely a good feeling in our blog world. No doomsday nonsense for us!
Thank you so much for your support!
Laurie, my post today links to this post on the Knit a Square challenge.
You are just wonderful Lynette! That's called going above and beyond the call!
I'm having trouble - I can't post comments on your blog? :( I'll keep trying. I'm sure it's a bug on my end.
Thank you so much for your support!
Just found you through Kanelstrand's blog... love the cause and I'll get busy crocheting tonight! :)
Thank you so much Melinda! I can't tell you how much it means to me to see so many people connecting for this cause!
For Melinda again. Thank you so much for following my blog! I went over to join yours (which I did!) and saw that you put up my button. I am truly touched! Thank you!!
Hi, just found you on Kanelstrand and came over. I will start making squares tonight. Would you please start following me @ www.carolynslifeanddiscoveries.wordpress.com
Thanks!
Thank you Laurie for highlighting knit-a-square.com - it really is an effective charity. We knit, they sew. Once the squares arrive, our team-workers, the Ladies of Soweto Comfort Club & G4 inmates sew them together and very quickly they are distributed (we try to give each child a hat as well). Take direct action and make a REAL difference to the lives of these parentless children - help kelp them warm and healthy.
Hi Carolyn! Thank you so much for joining us!! It will be my pleasure to follow your blog!
Thank you so much Pam, for all you do for Knit-a-square and for leaving your comment here! It is much appreciated!
I am in too, I just started to knit, but this is pretty easy:) What an inspiring project:)
Amithigirl, Thank you so much!! You'll see that this is perfect for a beginner. The squares are small and will give you confidence as you complete them. And, if you make a mistake, it's not long to rip out and correct!
Laurie, I have just found your great blog via the KAS forum-it is wonderful to see my favourite charity being promoted and hopefully this will result in lots more squares being sent for these children who have nothing. It is so nice to be able to indulge ourselves in knitting/crochet while creating something so useful. KAS is such a friendly and supportive worldwide community.
Thank you again for spreading the word and I shall definitely be a follower of your terrific blog from now on!
Charisg, thank you so much for following and for your lovely comments!I sincerely hope that this will be an effective way to get the word out. We just have to help these children. That's all there is to it!
I am workng on Christmas presents and I have many scrap yarns (too small for a project, but cant bring mysel to theow it away). Knitting squares will be perfect! If I knit squares between now and june then mail them to you would that work?
Hi Denielle! That would be fantastic! I know. It's a great way to use up our left-overs. Thanks so much for joining us!
Well I've been crocheting my squares (I'm a beginner)and finally took some time to read about you and see some of your work. OMG! Your stuff is really good and looks really hard to do..good thing you had hands on training. I'm thinking about knitting next but must admit it's a little daunting to see how far I have to go...one stich at a time!
Thank you for your lovely comment and making squares! The most important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing! Knitting really isn't harder than crocheting. It just takes practice!
I do love it and I got my first pair of needles today from the Goodwill Store...I may take a class at JoAnn, or continue my self taught traditions and learn on line! I have a friend who knits so she can help too. Since I'm in CA how much time do you think I need to send my squares to you so they arrive in time?
That's great Donna! Good for you! Packages get here pretty quickly, a week to ten days, so you have plenty of time! :)
I wanted to let you know that I posted about your offer on my blog here:

The next batch of squares that I have ready I'll send along to you!
Thank you so much Maggie!! Your squares are absolutely gorgeous!!! I'll be thrilled to send your next batch for you!
I am sending a box your way this week!
That's wonderful Sarah! Thank you so much!
Hi laurie,
Do you know anyone collecting squares in the US? I have 36 squares and 25 hats but my husband thinks mailing it to canada will be too expensive.
Hi Denielle,
I'm sorry. I don't. For most of the people who have sent me squares from the US - the same number as you- it's about $10. You can choose the cheapest method because I will be sending them to SA for as long as they are needed!
